Counselors & Psychologists, typically cannot prescribe medication like a psychiatrist can, as they are not medical doctors. Counselors & Psychologist can perform psychotherapy, which typically covers broad topics & more than one concern or problem.
Psychiatrist, Advanced Practice Nurse & DNP
Psychiatrist, APN and DNPs are trained in both medicine, mental health, and can prescribe medication.
Counselors & Social Workers
Traditionally counselors handle psychological issues their patients suffer from & social workers address social issues that create or amplify mental issues (i.e. housing insecurities, child with diverse learning concerns).
